OM603 head bolts
Has MB updated their torquing procedures for the head bolts on the OM60x.xx series of engines? They have changed the head and gasket several times. My service CD specifies a four stage, 15nm, 35nm, 90°, 90°. I’ve done this a few times and that last 90° is pretty nerve wracking. You could swear that the bolt is going to snap.

They are referred to as stretch bolts and the last 90 degrees feels like you might be stripping out the threads, but you aren't. Because they stretch, they are good for one use only.

I believe there is a specification for the bolts, and as long as they are still within spec, they can be reused.

I've measured mine and according to the published spec they are still good. I tried to order a new set but only recieved 14 of the 20 some odd required. My question is more has the procedure for torquing changed. When MB came up with a new gasket for the OM352 they changed the method.

Heres a wild shot but has anyone used ARP head studs, Is there even an application? THey don't stretch and would provide a far more even and stable torque.

Those things could be real nice for a diesel MB. They sure solved a lot of problems when folks started using moly studs on early diesel VWs
