Check your servo, the increased amp draw probibly ate the transistors that look to be toasted. This is a common thing.

Buy a good soldering iron and fix it, the parts are dirt cheap and it's a single layer PCB.

Whunter, I think the best bet is to retrofit an aftermarket CC. Wolf-walker has a good thread about doing it. Mine is toast as well and I don't feel like spending a lot of money on another amp that will end up like my old one.

The OEM cruise works like a dream when it's working, for however long it will work. For a car that racks up miles like mine do, the aftermarket route is a pretty good option. Mine's been just peachy since I installed it, and pretty darn cheap. I've had a good report from another member on a slightly more pricy electric servo unit and he was able to use the OEM speed sensor output.
I'll have him using the OEM control stalk before long as well.

Wolf, I'm still interested in going the aftermarket route. I have a feeling my servo is bad as well. Do you know what brand the pricier unit was? I'd like to keep the original stalk even though it doesn't really look like it belongs there either. I'd like to get it fixed so I can take it on a long trip this summer.

There are really only two parts that go bad with the original system, the amp and the servo. To replace both is not too costly. I replaced the amp in 1995 ($150) and the servo in 1999 ($200). They both still work just fine many years later. Well worth it in my opinion.

Cruise control fix

I've owned my 1983 240D since new. The cruise control thru the years has slowly gone down hill. Tried all the usual fixes/ tests. Probably needed a new amp. Instead I purchased online a Rostra Electronic unit for about $100. The unit installs on the left inner fender with drilling one hole. Connects to the installed cruise control linkage. Fed the wires thru the gromet behind the master brake cylinder. Unplugged the old amp. and plugged the new computer/actuator in that plug. I'm using all the orginal power, vss, and controls. All the cockpit controls work as they should. This system is terrific. Very smooth and reliable. Much better than the orginal system ever was.

Larry, what do you mean by,"I'm using all the orginal power, vss, and controls." Does it mean that I have to use my original servo. I think its bad on mine.

I'm curious too..

I saw recently(and thiefed the amp of course) an aftermarket VDO cruise on an old 116 car. Had a red plastic amp, our usual servo, but mounted in an odd place and with a long cable connecting it to the throttle lincage. Was very interisting. Amp was dead, naturaly.

As I've said before, the OEM stuff works wonderfully when in tip top shape, and is not ungodly pricy, just fairly so for the little piece of mind you get as to it's life expectancy. For a weekend car or resto job, sure, OEM all the way. But when your like me and may well put 50-80K miles a year on a car, much of that highway with the cruise on, it just does not financialy add up unless you have money to toss around. Anyway, there are other options..

I'd like to hear this too...along with where you got the Rostra unit from.

My amp's in the last stages of its death throes, although I think my servo's actually good (I plan to take it apart and clean/lube it at some point)...I was supposed to send my amp to Wolf to play with a while back; hopefully I'll have time to after school lets out...

I will admit, though, that I've also heard that the stock CC system has a lifespan of about 50,000 miles of actual use...doesn't sound like a lot to me

Rostra cruise

I like the electric Rostra idea so I did a little googleing. Here's a spot to check http://www.rostra.com/cruise-control.htm

After chasing a "find dealer" menu a nearby Pep Boys carries it.

I'm checking it out this week. Thanks for the tip Larry!
