cleaning soot and oily goop from 606 intake
Hi,
The intake on a 96 E300D (non-turbo 606 engine) has about a 16th of an inch of soot buildup on the surfaces past the EGR. Worse, the actual intake ports past where the crankcase gas recirculation points are (on the head itself) have the outside surfaces coated in a mixture of oil and soot, to make a heavy goop. Whats the best way to get the soof from the srfaces of the disconnected intake manifold? Whats the best way to clean the intake holes in the head? Im a little worried about that junk falling in and on the valves and causing trouble. Any suggestions? Thanks, JMH

I took my intake to a machine shop and they completely cleaned it using a hot wash...
