83 300SD Problem *Thumping*

Hello everybody, my names Daniel and i just recently got this car about 1 month ago from a used dealership. My problem is that when i press on the accelerator either a 1/4 or more down i get a horrible vibartion coming from my rear when the car is going between 15mph and 25mph, you can feel it even more with the more you press on the gas. It sounds like a thumping, rumbleing vibrating sound that comes what I think is the Right Rear. But after i pick up speed it stops making the horrible sound. And also when you lightly press on the gas and I slowly pick up speed you cant hear the sound at all or just barely. I just got the car not that long ago and gave it an oil change (2 times cuz the oil was so damn black, i guess that happens to diesels right??). Anyways i might have pushed the car to hard by pressing the gas to much and even starting it in 1st gear and punching it (I wanted to hear that turbocharger whistle) and drifting the car. I think thats where i went wrong, now im getting that noise, and worrying that it might by my tranny, or something in my rear end. Can someone plz help me find out what my problem is. I dont know about the previous matience but the engine sounds fine from a guy that has one just like mine.

Can somebody plz help me out? Ive posted in some other forums and their replies range from driveshaft support housings, rear (wheel?) bearings (sopposlitly the rubbers on these old cars go out after 20 years. ALso the Transmission mounts, Rear Suspension mounts, Rear Drive Axels and CV joints.

The guy we bought it from is a mechanic and he told my mom that it might cost couple hundred. I have yet to talk to him to find out what he thinks but when i do i want to inform him what i think might be the problem, so he doesnt try to rip her off (some dealers just pushed the rear down and said anyway from $600 to $1000.)

THanks for taking to time to read this, its greatly appreciated!!

thumping noise

My bet would be on the flex disc. Instead of U-joints these cars use a heavy rubber donut that couples the tranny o/p shaft and the driveshaft. Easy to replace with a 15mm and a 17mm wrench and a 8mm hex socket drive.

Over time the bolts are well mated to the rubber donut and the tranny snout is tightly fitted in the donut center so a pry bar may be necessary to pry the flex disc off the tranny and/or driveshaft snouts.

Since there are 3 bolts there will always be one that is up in the tunnel and needs the driveshaft turned to allow access. To do so, carefully jack up the rear at the diff and turn the rear tire (slowly) with the tranny in neutral (chock wheels well in front or have car on 4-stands (GOOD jackstands). When the last nut is accessible lower rear and plae tranny in park and continue job.
DONT get hurt by not taking precautions.

email if you need more specifics.

Oh, the flex disc is about $40 and I have (in driving snow) done it in 20 min (I did get home and have to tighten the bolts again with a breaker bar, but I DID get home )

replied to your PM.

Get a manual, or do a search and find one of the online scanned PDF manuals some people have generously uploaded to their site.

Most likely are rear wheel bearing. Maybe hard to pin point. One way to do it is jack/lift the rear up, put it in drive and trace the noise source.
