oversize radiator-300sd

Does anybody make an oversize radiator for an '82 300sd?

It's radiator time on mine and if I can't get a larger one,I'm just going to have the old one rodded out and new tanks put on.

Thanks----------Robert

I put a nine blade fan from a 420 116 engine on my 81 SD it runs cool even on long grades. Same bolt patern takes about fifteen minutes to take off old six bale fan and put on the nine blade one......

The old radiator has a small seep where somebody had attempted to make a repair with epoxy at the overflow tube, and it's starting to overheat some if idling in traffic or climbing hills here in Arkansas.
Im sure it's filthy inside. The fan clutch checks out via a test procedure I found on this site, but I still wouldn't rule it out as bad.

I always like to put larger radiators in my vehicles if they are available, a little overkill never hurt.

That wizzard radiator sure looks nice, but I was hoping to not have to go the custom route ..

I like that fan idea, but I may be out of luck , the boneyard pickin's for these things around here are slim. I did notice a '85 gas burner126 body last week that had a larger diameter electric fan on it. I may try to scavange that along with the braces and see if that helps any .

RLD,

Is you original radiator made of copper or aluminum?

If it copper just have a new core put in. That will be equivalent to a new radiator. Any good radiator shop can do a recore job. Possibly a higher capacity core can be put in.

If you have an aluminum radiator, replace it with a copper/brass radiator. I saw someplace here in the BBs a copper/brass radiator is available.

The original radiator looks like aluminum with plastic end tanks, and the tanks are shot, but the core dfoesn't have any physical damage on the outside,.
I'm not sure if the repair industry has gone so far as to have replacement cores for plastic tank radiators yet, they're just getting the end tank replacement thing perfected . the tanks always go first and if the tanks and core are shot,a new radiator would be cheaper.

I bet the copper/brass radiator is a Nissens.I've had great luck with those in Volvos , But I don't know if they are the same capacity as stock , although the ones that Nissens makes for volvo diesels are listed as stock, but when I got mine I counted and measured cooling tubes and the nissens radiator had about 30% more cooling capacity than the stock radiator for that vehicle

Well I answered my own question.
I went ahead and bought a new Nissens radiator ( about $220 ).
The original Behr radiator had 35 rows of tubes and was 34mm thick, and the new Nissens radiator has a whopping 53 rows of tubes and is 40mm thick.
That's a pretty hefty increase from the stock radiator.
With the combination of that and a 9 blade fan that I lucked upon on ebay this thing is now running cool as can be. With the AC on full purposly driving around in circles in downtown traffic at rush hour in roughly 100deg f (39c) weather, the car now runs between 90and 100deg c . before the thing would have overheated after about 5 minuits of that torture. My wife said that it ran between 80-90c on her freeway commute yesterday, so it looks like that problem is solved.

Thanks--------Robert

RLD,

Is the Nissens radiator you got aluminum/plastic or copper/brass?
