Today in addition to checking my A/C system, I'm going to change my steering damper AKA steering shock absorber. I spent a 1/2 hour looking through my CD FSM and there's no reference to it. There were a few pictures with a #15 on it but thats all. As much of a help the CD FSM has been it's also been a big POS due to it's missing technical info. I guess I'm goung to either try using my bar type torque wrench to see where it finally breaks loose at or I'm going to use a value of 35 Nm which I found for another component.
Are the printed manuals just as bad? I haven't been lucky enough to have a winning bid on one yet, it is worth it or am I just going to have a printed version of the POS CD FSM?
I was looking for the A/C compressor in the CD FSM. I couldn't find that component either.

FSM CD job # 46-550 has the following:

"Steering damper......srew on, replace self locking nut. 35Nm."

It's in the center link section of 46.

Technical data (except torque) is in 46-050.

More than I want to know about A/C compressors is job # 83-524 (page 8 is where the R-4 starts). Good luck

Well wadaya know.
I did find the torque value right in 46-550 but I have 45Nm in mine. The other reference to the "shock" was in two other small sentences. I guess as I got a bit overwhelmed by trying to go through all the previous sections, I guess I simply missed it. I didn't have a section 46-050 in my CD.
I also found the section about the compressors right where you said it would be but since it was in the HVAC I and I have the automatic climate control III, I didn't even bother looking in there.

I looked in my Technical Data Manual and they said:
"steering damper on drag link or console side member..50Nm."

So now we see three different values from MB publications

Obviously not too, too critical or it was free beer Friday when the engineers decided on a torque value on the damper .

The only thing is it would have been good to know that the nuts on steering damper were lock nuts. I took the old ones and bashed them between two sledge hammers so I could reuse them.

They always seem to have the torque values in the FSM but normally you have to be creative to find the right pdf to look it up under. I also have the Chilton and Haynes manuals but don't really use either. The Haynes manual is much better than the Chilton but still not very impressive.

I still haven't been able to locate the torque values for the intake and exhaust manifolds. I've got a fed set coming soon and I'm hoping to find or get those numbers from somewhere before I swap them out on my car. Boost, any chance your Hanes or Chilton books spec anything?
