looking for a new (to me) diesel benz

I got rear ended about two months ago, and now it finally looks like I'm going to get the money for it. I have a 300SD, and I was thinking about repairing it, but there's just a lot of stuff wrong with it that I was gonna get to eventually. But now that I'm gonna get a few grand for this car, I'm strongly leaning towards putting some more money and getting another one that has less problems.

I found this car: http://autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=166604314&dealer_id=&car_year=1995&search_type=used&make=MB&model=&transmission=&distance=50&address=32601&advanced=y&certified=n&max_mileage=&max_price=12000&min_price=3000&first_record=26&end_year=2005&start_year=1984&drive=&engine=&body_style=&advcd_on=y&doors=&=&fuel=&color=&cardist=50 on Autotrader, and it seems crazy that it's this cheap. Is it just me that thinks that?

Also, if any of you know of a diesel in good condition under $10k in the central/north Florida area, please let me know.

Greetings, jivadent!

Could you be a little more specific about what you're seeking, or at least what you're willing to consider? As recent a model as possible? An older model, but in pristine condition?

I'm asking because I'm in north Florida (Tallahassee area), and I'm also looking for a M-B diesel, but specifically for something '85 or earlier (300D, 300SD, or 300TD, turbo cars only). If I notice something that I think might be of interest to you, I'd be happy to pass the information along. Likewise, I'd appreciate it if you'd do the same for me. It may be that our "wants" don't overlap at all.

I search the Autotrader often with a wide enough search area to include Gainesville, but some of the better deals never make it to Autotrader or the classified ads, so I'd never see them. There's no substitute for being there when something happens to turn up.

Gainesville isn't exactly next door, but would be well worth the drive for the right car!

I don't have anything specific in mind, other that I don't want a C class. I want at least an E, an S if I can get it. So I'm looking at the 300D, 300SD mostly. As recent as I can get it, but I'd rather get something older if it's in good condition, and I don't want the new body style with the round headlights - those piss me off.

If I find a 300D, 300SD in the Gainesville area, I'll prolly get it myself But if I don't, or I find two, I will definitely let you know. And if you find something up there, let me know too.

Give Steve Brotherton a call at Continental Imports (or go by to see him) and see if he knows of any that are available in the area.

AutoTrader's been known to make mistakes. I think the price might be missing a "1" at the beginning.

Out of curiosity, how long have you been looking? If you only recently started following the Autotrader ads, then you won't necessarily know how many of the ads there are "stale" - they seem to keep some of 'em up there a long time.

I saw fairly recent Autotrader listings for an '84 300D (18x,xxx miles) and an '84 300TD in Jacksonville. Also a Cars.com listing for an '83 300CD in Orlando. Again, I don't know your heart's desire or quite how wide an area you're willing to consider.

Good luck with your search!

I saw those cars too, but I don't want an '84 300D because I don't like the chassis on those. I do like the 300D's within a couple of years of 1990, and I'm actually looking at three of those, and an '87 300SDL.

OK, that narrows the scope a little bit, and it appears that our primary choices don't overlap. If you become aware of the availability of something nice, '85 or earlier, turbodiesel, please give me a shout. The one exception here is the Autotrader ads - no need to point those out to me, as I'm checking them myself already.

If you consider Tallahassee close enough to be within your search radius, then let me know, and I'll keep an eye out for an SDL or newer 300D.

That last SDL looks nice, it has had a lot of work done to it.

I'll have my '87 300D on the market in a week or two. Have the dash apart replacing A/C vent pods. It's got 252K but is very clean and goes like stink. Priced at $3995.

I settled on a '91 350SD, in great condition. I'm picking it up Tuesday and I'll post pictures up.
