Thumbs up Someone finally intercooled an OM603

And they, um, made a couple other "modifications" while they were in there. Full details are at the URL below - it's all in Finnish, but just look at the photos (all three pages), you get the idea:

Here's some teaser photos I copied from the link above:

I hope you're all sitting down...

... because this guy didn't just say "yeah, it's fast", he actually provided PROOF in the form of a dyno sheet. BTW: ~290kW is about 400hp. I didn't do the torque conversion but I think 612Nm is um, like, a lot?

:p :p :p :p :p :p :p :p :p

That is nice! I'm looking forward to turbocharging my diesel - gasser engines were fun, I'm ready for something new.

Eikös noita Super-turboja ole jo sen verran että voisi perustaa oman nettisivun? Vaikka Englanniksi ni sais ulkomaan elävätkin tietää Suomen Turbo Diesel tietämyksestä?

Thanks for the eye-candy. The guy doing the fabrication is an artist.

Dave, don't you think that gigantic intercooler would introduce some serious lag?

You'd think so - but I don't think they're exactly concerned about spool-up time, or turbo lag... it's all about the PEAK POWER, baby! (at least that's my guess.)

I've never found that to be the case. By far the largest component of "lag" is due to spooling the turbine. A free-flowing exhaust and good boost controller are the best tools for minimizing lag. Especially since there is no throttle.

Oh My! God forbid! According to some members here, an intercooler is a stupid idea and will not benefit a diesel motor.

I want! So bad! They should shoot it with propane now! These guys should sell these as kits! I could hunt 500E's with that under the hood! It probably gets decent mpg's if you keep your foot out of it.

Actually, the problem has been that several people installed intercoolers in the past 5+ years, but nobody provided hard data on the gains. And, AFAIK, not one of them increased fuel delivery so DUH, there will be no power gain. These inherently flawed modifications gave intercooling a bad rap. Done properly you do get power gains.

I have been chatting with Anssi off-line, who sent me the link above. According to him, with the stock turbocharger, intake, exhaust, injectors, and tweaking the injection pump... adding an intercooler should allow 180-200hp on a 3.0L 603 engine. Beyond 200hp will require much more signficant mods, as you can see above. My goal is the simple intercooler, a la Mosselman, ~180hp, and retaining my current 30mpg!

BTW - Marshall was mostly questioning the modified air intake on a stock engine, and also trying to discern if the engine in question was putting out factory rated power or not... which I agree with. He is not in favor of modifying beyond stock power levels but that's because he doesn't quite understand the need some of us have to get MORE power (grunt, grunt!), admittedly at the cost of engine longevity and reliability. I don't care that my engine may only last to 500kmi at 180hp, where it may last 800kmi at stock 148hp...
