I may take the plunge soon and change the front brakes to the 560SEL (rotors and calipers) change the bearings, shocks to comforts, all while putting in the vogtlands both front and back if I can find the stock rear spring specs and see how they compare to the wagon rear springs. I've got alot to do before may 16 when I make the coastal voyage.

I am also thinking of some sort of brake upgrade on the CD. I am generally pretty easy on brakes 100km or more on pads usually(I think the pads on my 89 Caprice are original). I drive fast when the roads are clear, but I like a lotta room in front of me, and I use the engine to do most of my braking.
Still I have that 2.47 diff in this car and when I get a little more maintenance and tuning done on it I want to borrow a GPS and open her up to see what the top end is. -And vehicles that go fast need to be able to stop fast. (learned that building choppers back when it didn't look cool to have front brakes cluttering up the front wheel:eek:)

as far as I am aware the only "upgrade" that bolts on won't decrease your stopping distance any.. That is to take vented rotors off a W126, as well as W126 calipers, and stick them on the W123... All this does is make it so your brakes don't fade as fast, but stopping once from 120-130mph shouldn't matter too much...

That is what I am thinking too. But vented rotors would still be an upgrade. I'm thinking that I am going to have to do wheel bearings all the way around before too long (they are quiet but too much play) and that would be a good time to change calipers and replace rotors, new pads, maybe control arm rubbers, and anything else I can find worn.

No, vented rotors and w126 calipers won't stop a w123 in a shorter distance- but they will resist heat much better. I've had over 10 brake fading incidents due to sticking calipers and it's not fun at all, much less to talk about safe operation. If you play a bit with the TC- you can get a engine that resists the return to idle- guess what... that stresses the braking system to it's (pun intended) breaking point. It's a definite upgrade, and mine will happen before the end of may.

I have a sticky right caliper (sticking on one piston only) and a badly warped rotor as a result... I'll be doing something soon on that side, I just don't yet know what... I'm thinking of sticking with stock brakes for now, because that would mean keeping the existing parts (the entire left front brake apparatus) and saving some $$.

How are the comforts? I am considering shaving the 1nub in the front. Still just a bit or rear rake unloaded.

the w123 was called "The Wedge" for a reason :)

I'll be going 1 nub front and maybe 3 in the rear

-Worked for me.
If I had nothing else to do I think I would pull my fronts again and shave the 1 nub to half it's thickness... or so . -just leaving enough to cushion the spring to perch connection

Comforts

Winmut- I like the comforts. If I was planning on 'autocross' or some such, I would probably go with the HDs. As it is, exit speeds of twice the posted speed seem just fine. Waaaaay less body roll. And with out better tires than I presently have that is as fast as I would push it. Every time I take a fast corner for the next while I am gonna think nice things about Adam for getting this spring thing together.
Also, I think your idea of shaving the front 1 nubs is a good idea or maybe use 4 nubs on the back if they are available. Are either of these pads usable on a 126 or a 124, something else? If not and someone wants my 4 nub front pads they can have 'em cheap :D They might be just right if you were putting a big block v-8 in there:rolleyes:
And for anyone out there who is thinking "Well I never drive that way, so I don't need handling upgrades" Fella when you come around a curve into a herd of Elk or deer sometime, or that crazy cell-phone using airhead who might run you (or your daughter) off the road.... :eek:you will want all the handling you have and then some!
