I think I've gotten to everyone's requests.
To summarize: It is a 1984 500 SEL, modified by ITS in Germany to 1000SEL spec and imported to USA. If you guys have any more questions I'll be more than happy to answer them. If no one is interested, do you guys think you can reccomend some places I should start advertising this puppy so MBZ enthusiasts can see? Best, BM2 |

Looks interesting but probably needs a lot of work. I'd try Ebay or MBCA. It will probably comand a slight premium over a regular 500SEL.
What are you asking?

Well, the thing is I can't really place an "official" private party value on this car since it is modified.
What I can tell you is that back in '84, the car cost $145,000. In 2000, an MBZ collecter from OC offered me 18,000. I also have seen a similar car (on these forums) for around 16,000 A classic euro dealership in So Cal had also offered to buy it from me around the same time for 12,000. So those are the only numbers I have to work with. It def. needs some TLC to get it really pretty again, so I that will be taken into consideration on the final price. Let me know what you think guys. Thanks |

I was thinking $5k!
![]() ![]() ![]() Its one of the more lightly modified examples I have seen. I was under the impression that only the heavly modified cars commanded any kind of premium. PM me I have an Email address for you, there is someone you should talk to. He sells a lot of W126's he should be able to give you an idea of market value.

I was thinking the same thing. I'd try to locate the place that offered the 12 and 18K prices. For example, When my Duchatelet which is a bit more modified, last sold on ebay to the guy I got it from, it only went for $5000 from the original owner. I have $150,000+ in receipts that he had spent on it. 150K to 5K. talk about depreciation.

Being serious though, I will need to probably get a def. value on this thing becuase the wide range I've seen/been offered doesn't really help out. I appreciate your guys' input, hopefully I can find this puppy a home becuase I still got some sentiment towards it. |

Look, if the car was that valuable to MB collectors, we would be falling all over ourselves to buy it. No ill will intended, but you are gonna come to the realization that a custom rear badge, floor mats, funky wheels, numerous rear speakers, a radio where your elbow goes and a hideous steering wheel don't make it that valuable.
I would definitely try and look up the folks that were interested in it in the past..... It ain't awful, but it is just a step above ordinary. **oh, and hasn't been driven in 5 years??** ![]() I am impressed with your honesty. ![]()

If you REALLY want to see what the market is on it, put it on ebay. Capitalism at its finest.
Yes, I'm aware people get caught up in the bidding craze... but for the more reserved (and educated) purchaser/bidder, you'll see what the car can fetch.

Okay, seriously, bemaitea2. You've been a real good sport, and you seem honest. I'll toss you a "what I think" and you may do what you wish.
The most likely buyer of a car like yours will be a Mercedes guy. To most Mercedes guys, your car shows like an old, worn out 500SEL with some body paint on the bumpers and a few 80's stereo customizing things. I don't think your car is an AMG. I don't think you car is an ITS (whatever that may be, it looks like a sticker someone tossed up on there). It's been sitting for at least 10 years, has bad paint, a worn interior, a worn engine bay, and a few 80's customizing things like side valences (no AMG body kit, no spoilers, no aprons, nothing), Lorinser wheels, a 1000SEL badge (just a badge, that's it), and a Becker in the rear armrest. It's an old 500SEL - no more, no less. Therefore, I don't think you'll get much for it. You seem honest, and it's certainly possible you've had offers in the past for $10,000+, but I don't see why. It just makes no sense. $8000 could get you a real AMG SEL in "used" condition. $12000 could get you a real AMG SEL in "good" condition. $18000 could get you a real AMG SEL in "excellent" condition. I think if you researched its history, had some docs proving its provenance, made an excellent ad with excellent photos, and tossed it up on ebay with no reserve, the market would tell you its worth to be $3500-$4500. Without any provenance, I bet the ebayers let it die for about $2500. Good luck to you, and thanks for taking our comments (mine included!) with a grain of salt.

For starters I would suggest getting out a toothbrush and shining up that engine bay.

Yes, clean it up. That'll add another $500. Seriously. Trashed cars=lazy or cheap owners, esp. when it comes to a sale.
