In have been watching this thread with interest and picked up a few ideas for my 82 500SL euro which I am going to put into action .

My Euro has no catalitic convertor as per OEM specs , it just has the two x 2 inch pipes coming from the exhaust manifold leading to a resonator , but before the resonator right up front there is a cross over pipe which is about 2 feet wide between the two pipes coming from the exhaust manifold .

This crossover is at a ninety deg angle between the two pipes .

I don't know if this is standard on this model or if it was installed by a previous owner , would some one care to comment .

This leads me to say, that from the resonator the twin two inch pipes run close and parallel to the rear muffler which is a twin pipe inlet and twin pipe outlet .

That is 2 inches inlet 1 and three quarter inch outlet tail pipes.

My intention is to remove the resonator completly and replace it with a small 45 deg crossover right at that site leaving the rest of the system as described.

At present the resonator needs replacing, but I will replace with a small crossover as above, as I feel the crossover at this point will dampen sound ( not as much as the resonator ) and give a free flow of gas and a mix of gas to equalize the back pressure , and additionally give a deeper V8 sound.

I will therefore have two crossovers on this system, the one up front and the new one as described .

I will let you know the resulting outcome , good or bad .

Any comments appreciated.

That should sound good. I have an appointment today to have em look at me exhaust and see what they can do.

Duxthe1 did you just have a new piece of pipe welded on, or how did that work? I am worried about it melting the plastic on the lower bumper cover.

i have not heard that a crossover will muffle. what i heard was having one increased power.

I was expecting no change and the silencing effect surprised me.

Denis: I think you will find a good result with your plan. I took my cats out as my locality doesn't require emissions after 25 years (78 car) and put the timevalve Euro 'engine pipes' in their place. This freed up some hp, although not much, I'm sure.

I believe 6.3s had an 'H' pipe, so yours may be standard. The idea from what I understand on evening pulses is to get the crossover, whether 'H' or 'X' shaped as close to the engine as possible. Having an X downstream of an H will probably further smooth it out.

Let us know how your experiment goes

wont the cross pipe further back hang down too low and drag? it will have to go under the driveshaft.

Tom,

The existing H crossover on my 1982 500SL Euro is placed way up front just as the pipes each side of the engine leave the exhaust manifold , and it crosses about where the engine meets the gearbox, and the crossover pipe is a good 2 to three feet long. This H crossover is well and truly high and ground clearance is fine .

In regard to the planned X crossover pipe , this will replace the center resonator/muffler . As on my 500SL the two pipes come together at this point , so its just a matter of removing the resonator and putting in the X crossover right at that site , and again the X crossover will have the same good ground clearance as the resonator .

Justin, The problem in removing the center resonator is that it has two pipes on the inlet and one on the outlet. Deleting the rear muffler is as simple as welding in a piece of pipe and adding a stylish tip. I let my exhaust guy use his judgement on the pipe. He angled out towards the left side with a slash cut chrome tip.

HEHEHE....

I think I am going to cut it, and weld a new pipe on. Save some room, and weight.

Do you know if they make some square tips for the pipe??

Oh, and also, could I just clamp the pipe on?
