Suspension decisions

Hello all. I'm trying to decide from among some different suspension options and am requesting your input. I've done much searching on the forum and have found some great info; however, some questions remain unanswered.

I have a '93 300E and it's time to replace the shocks. I'm debating getting Sportline springs/shocks, the full Sportline package, or Bilstein shocks and Eibach lowering springs.

What I'm looking for is an improvement in handling; I'm willing to give up some ride comfort but also don't want the car to ride too roughly -- it is, after all, a Mercedes-Benz. (Since it's relevant, I'm still using the stock 15" wheels but am looking to upgrade to 16" wheels later on.)

What would the ride be like with the Bilstein/Eibach setup? I'm leaning toward that but am concerned the ride might be affected too much. Also, if I end up going the Sportline route, should I go with the whole shebang or just get the springs/shocks? The cost of the full conversion seems high to me.

Thanks for your help. This forum is really great.

When I compared the cost of the Sportline to the aftermarket spring/shock/swaybar kits, the sportline worked out about the same price. (comparing all 3 components for each manufacturer - not just the sportline kit to brand x springs and shocks!) Also, the sportline included sub frame and control arm bushings for good measure - a factory engineered package aimed at retaining comfort while adding sporting capabilities!

Try to find a car set up with each of the options you are considering and ride/drive it - every once in a while you can find a used sportline at the dealerships. Also, search the archives for comments from people who have gone with eibach, sportline, H&R, etc.

If on a budget, I might exclude the control arm bushings, as that is pretty labor intensive, but I would certainly keep the anti-sway bars and sub frame bushings along with the springs and shocks. No regrets at all!

Here is a quote from the thread that I have started called Best shocks for lowered E420.
I have gone the Eibach route and am planning on geting Bilsitine shocks soon, along with 17 or 18 in wheels and tires.

I will be putting them in the front soon. He has 17's, and I have 16's. If you compare to a stock e320/e420 that is riding on stock springs/shocks, you will be absolutely amazed.

Someone earlier said they miss the flat cornering of their 928. This is as close as it gets without adding some type of strut bar/anti roll bar. It is truly awesome. It even tightened up the steering which I consider a positive side-effect. It feels like a nimble sports car now when driven hard, and subtle when cruising down the freeway. Best of both worlds.

If you do not want the stiff ride, then don't do this setup. By stiff I mean taught when you go over bumps and dips. The car just sticks and does not bounce. Add that to the solidness of the car and you will be amazed.

Also remember, bilstein makes comfort, sport, and heavy duty. The comforts are meant to be similar to OEM, and sport and HD are roughly the same in stiffness.

I just can't wait to get my fronts put on now

After reading what people have to say, I came up with another idea. Would it be wise to get Sportline springs and Bilstein shocks? I ask because it seems the Eibach springs are going to affect the ride too much for my liking, and doing the combo might solve that problem while also improving handling, assuming my understanding of suspensions is correct (and if it's not, please correct me).

Thanks,
Mike
