A/C compressor auto shut off?

Found a set of uninhabited roads last night and decided to re-acquaint myself with the upper limits of my 500E.

I had both distributor caps replaced recently and noticed a bit more power on tap. I decided to find out just how much. After doing several WOT starts from 1st gear, I noticed that on WOT starts, and as the speed climbs on full WOT, the a/c compressor cuts out (i.e. a/c air is not cold). After letting off the accelerator (as I run out of road), cold air comes back on.

Is this just my car or does it happen to others as well? It makes sense to me to cut out the a/c compressor on WOT for a few more horsies...and I ain't complaining. Just worried that instead of MB's technological prowess showing up, something may actually be wrong with my baby.

(After replacing both distributor caps, by the way, the car was willing to break loose the rear tires a bit more eagerly )

Non-technically speaking---

last summer, I tested some E500 WOT spurts with a/c on and a/c off (city and highway)

I didn't observe the a/c cut out on WOT in city or highway spurts

performance-wise: I did observe that the a/c zaps a noticable amount of juice from the E500 (vs. w/ a/c off)...and we all know that with 100 degree coolant temps even more juice has disappeared....

Rain- do you recall this behavior of a/c cut out on WOT in your SL500?

Nope. But then again, I didn't play with it often enough. Just sold it last week too. Too bad I can't check.

Anybody else have this happen to 'em?

There's no A/C cutoff-funny, 'cuz my '82 Mustang GT shut off the A/C under WOT.

I'd be willing to bet your monobelt is slipping...how's the tensioner look? First place you should check....if the system detects any slippage, it takes the A/C offline
