This was possibly my solution: https://www.improvedracing.com/high-flow-engine-transmission-oil-cooler-thermostat.htmlas I have found the original bypass is not available from MB and will need to be sourced from a so equipped engine. Also the original is a pressure valve not a tempurature valve. The external temp valve would offer more precise control of oil temp if that matters but maybe it does not need that precise control.

The oil cooler will do essentially nothing without the bypass valve. That's what Ive been doing for 7 years in my iron 4.5 and never realized it until a couple years ago when I went down this rabbit hole. There's nothing in the block main oil passage when you have no oil cooler. You add an oil cooler , great. But the path of least resistance hasn't changed. The bypass valve plugs the main oil passage, sends it to the cooler loop until the cooler loop is a restriction, and it bypasses back to the main oil passage. Mine barely gets warm while beating the snot out of my car all day. Some oil might meander through there but it's got no good reason to. Thermal siphoning? You could hook an auxiliary pump to it to circulate but I imagine a pump that will be trusted to not leak under oil pressure would be expensive. You really need the bypass valve.

I know this is an old thread, but i have an alloy block 4.2 to which i am fitting an oil cooler. I managed to find an oil filter housing which has the by pass valve and inlet and outlet ports built into the housing.

May be of help to someone.

The one I see on eBay doesn't have two ports. It's got a port and a oil pressure sending unit. Is that what you are talking about?

No, the one i have just bought has 2 ports.
The one with 1 port takes the feed from the block, but returns the oil to the filter. This type needs the internal bypass valve fitting.
The housing with 2 ports has the bypass valve fitted in the housing.
Have emailed you a picture
