I see what you are saying now, your cars are different then (?) I would think Al's would be like mine...anyway...I'll have to post you the part number of the piece(s) I had to replace (w/the slider on my 500E) which illuminates the gear it is in.
When I got the part, I remember, it was for a euro shift-able tranny but the plastic parts I needed were the same as the US parts that was put in (clear slider piece and clear cover) I'm almost certain you could buy the part for your cars and screw right in. Al...your tranny was replaced on your car? |

SWEET! Please do tell us the part number! Not having a gear illumination light just bugs me to no end...

Yeah for no reason as it turns out
It was a warranty replacement because the dum Service rep was uneducated about the delay that is necessary when shifting these cars from say R to D before you step on the gas. if you do not allow a second for the gear to completely engage, the tranny will make a slipping sound. I'm used to the way the US cars shift. You can go from park to R to D to R to D and never take your foot off the gas and there is no delay in shift. In fact there is an old oldsmobile commercial that shows a 95-96 Cutlass "on a closed course with a profesional driver" at wide open throttle slammin the car from D to R and back and forth over and over and she peeling out like crazy. So anyway, i later learned , that you have to pause just a moment when going between these gears to avoid making that sound. Anyway, I did,n't pay so i wasn't concerned.

I'm actually sort of stymied why Al's 500E wouldn't have that part, unless the new tranny wasn't put together with those internal goods...anyway, I'll dig up that part number for y'all...

part numbers
I'd better do this now or I'll forget...bulb is number A000 825 00 94 (12volt, 0.4 watt) and indicator is 129 540 00 49...retails at $33. Get it and you'll see what I'm talking about. PartsShop here can do nicely in a few days.
So, when you take the 129 part apart, meaning the top clear cover and then black piece with PRND32B painted on it you'll see the clear slider with a tooth on the gear side so it can move with the rod. That 129 number is for a euro tranny so I'd guess there's a US equivalent 129 number without the tranny switch. Or get that one and use the parts to fix your US part (that's what I did). I think both of yours might have the broken clear piece (?)...even my old 1980 VW Rabbit diesel auto had gear lite indicators when you shifted into them. Let me/us know what you got in there. Maybe Santa will set you up straight.... ! Merry Christmas guys (and gals) !! ![]() |

My '92 500E has a brighter light level in the selected gear display. My wife's '93 300TE does not.

No Trans Indicator Light?
I have a 95 E300 Diesel (W124)
I recently replaced my transmission console light, but I do not ever remember the actual P/R/N/D gear light up or be brighter than the rest of the trans console whenever I am in any particular gear? I am curious if any other W124 owners are lacking the same feature, if it is suppose to be this way, or if I need to look for a 2nd bulb or buy some assembly (as posted in this thread) to have this feauture? Thanks in advance for any advice Mark 95 E300 Diesel 154,000 miles & still runs like a dream. |
