See the big black box that says "BATTERY IN TRUNK"? That's the CAN box. The LH module is inside, along with several other modules. You need to open the CAN box, remove the LH module, then carefully open up the LH module, gently pry the stock chip out of it's socket, and plug in the new chip. Reassembly is the reverse. Should take less than an hour. I'd disconnect the negative battery cable before doing this.

Hey - did that eBay auction change information? Or did I just have a senior moment a few years early? Anyway, the LH module shown now (017-545-45-32) is indeed for a 5.0L engine. I would have SWORN that when I first looked at the auction, there was a 4.2L module displayed.
Anyway, that module was used on the W140.070 (500SEL, S500) and W140.051 (500SEC, S500) from 1993-1995. It was never used in any W124's. I don't know if it will work in a 124 or not. Actually I'm nearly certain it won't work, as both the auction and the EPC note issues with VIN verification and theft prevention... I think the later LH modules have programming that requires some dealer tweaking before they'll work. D'oh. I should have my original 1994 E500 LH module for sale in a few months, with RENNtech chip installed, and stock chip included... similar price. I want to do dyno testing with it before I sell it though. This will work in your 500E but won't have the WOT enrichment like your 1992 module has. ![]()

Also, sorry for hijacking this thread... I would still be interested in buying an ASR defeat (if I can get the rest of my car running right!) if one comes available! -Brian Flanagan |

The W124 modules are interchangeable. So yes, I'm almost certain that my 94 will work in your 92, especially since a 92 module works fine in my 94. I think the theft prevention hassles only apply to the W140 chassis. The original (012- to 016-) modules from the W140 have all been superceded to that new 017- module. The note in the EPC says "Theft-relevant part, when ordering state VIN number." Kinda sounds like the dealer has to order one coded to the VIN for the W140. Weird, huh. ![]() The 1993-1995 R129 5.0L modules will work - they are the same part numbers as the 124 modules, a direct swap for your 500E. But as you mentioned... darned close to the needle in a haystack scenario, at least at a palatable price. ![]() I think an older module from a 140 *might* work, but again, I'm not certain. Most of those numbers are one digit different than the 124/129 numbers. What the difference is, I'm not sure - I haven't gotten brave enough to try one. I think for the 140 modules, definitely avoid ones with an 017- part prefix. One of the 013- through 016- modules *might* work. The only one that I know for sure works is the 012- that I recently sold, which I have in my car. What are your symptoms, btw? (You can contact me via email if you don't want to continue the hijack, lol... or we could move over to the 500E.com thread... ![]()

Interested In having it Done
I know this thread post is well over 4 1/2 yrs. old. However, does your friend still do these switch installations? I just bought a 1992 MB 500 SEL. ASR light comes on randomly causing power reduction. I must stop, turn off egfine, and restart. I live in So Cal. 909-946-8109, wife's cell 909-815-1140. Or do you have any update info. noone seems to know how to fix this.
Thanks, Bob

If I may....this switch will not cure the LH mode problem you seem to have been experiencing. "LH" is 'limp home' mode if you didn't know. It can be tough to pin-point what is causing the problem...sometimes its as simple as a brake light switch, neutral lock-out switch or much worse ($$) being the throttle body actuator or engine wiring.
Not sure who you have to work on the car (dealer or indy), but they should be able to pull the fault codes from the CAN (computer area network) and be able to go from there as a start. Everytime your ASR lite comes on there is a code(s) that caused it stored. Good luck ! BTDT with my 92' years ago and took a while to figure it out. ![]() |

1997 s420 asr problems
Hi everybody.
I just got a used 1997 s420. The other day I was backing in to my driveway and one of my back wheel was on the grass. Since it was raining when I pressed on the gas pedal the wheel slips and the next day I went to start it, I had an ASR light that came on. The car had no power and it took a while before it went away. I figured it went away for good but it keeps on coming back. It does not have a pattern. I tried using a dtc code reader it comes up with throttle valve actuator, EVAP. Can anyone help me fix this? Also, the car has an off switch for the asr but it has no effect at all when I pressed the off switch. best regards. jv Last edited by whunter; 11-09-2007 at 10:16 PM. Reason: spelling |
