Shift lever light
Can someone with a 92 or earlier E Class tell me if your PRND.... has a lighted [_] surrounding the letter when the lever is moved to the appropriate gear. My 92 400E does not have this feature, but my 93 500E does. Just trying to see if the lights out on the 92 or if this feature wasn't added till 93

My '92 500E shift indicator consists of a brighter light backlighting the selected gear marking (P, R, D, etc.). When I bought the car, the shift indicator light was burned out. It supposedly required some disassembly to replace it; I had it done when I had the tranny replaced.

I believe all the cars from the early nineties had this...my 92' 190 E 2.6 had it as does my 92' 500E.
Its easy to replace bulbs in there...need to pull up wood console to get to gear selector area...about 1/2 hr. to do the job.

So there are 2 lights under there?
The entire area where the PRND IS "backlit" , but there is no lighted box[_] when I shift from gear to gear. So are there 2 lights. One to provide the back lighting and then 1 for the [_]

Yes, one bulb at top (I had changed this one)and one near bottom of shifter somewhere. There's a piece of clear plastic that directs or magnifies the light onto the gear your in by some nutty German engineering trick. Bulbs are cheap enough at dealer and can also be bought at like AutoZone, from what I've heard.

Only one light in mine
I disasembled the shifter and to my wonder/amazement there was only one light in the shifter. the back light actually plugs right up where the letters are. Either some of the shifter guts were left when the tranny was replaced 5+years ago OR this one missed a few QA checks

hrrmmm... my car doesn't indicate what gear one is in either, I marvelled when I saw my friends 500E that did it.... I will open up the console and see if I have 2 bulbs as well and one is just fused....

on the 124...I have only the one lamp up top too, in a plug...I must have been thinking of another model(?)...or smokin' bad juju (more likely). Though I remember when the top lamp was out on mine there was another lamp down lower still lighting up. Whatever...
So...if lamp is OK then the plastic slider to illuminate gear selected is no good?

Believe me, I check. Its just a one light ,non gear select illuminationation feature, ding dong, dilly whopper!
