I have a '99 E55. My local dealer called me Friday, they have an unfilled slot for a S55 and wanted to know if I have any interest. I'm going to drive a S500 (with a sport package?) this afternoon to get a sense for the car. The dealer does not have much info about prices or features. Does anyone know much about the AMG version of the S class?

On an related note, I am first on the dealers list of the new supercharged AMG version due out as part of the new E class due in 2002. Does anybody know what the timetable for release of the AMG version of the new E Class is scheduled to be? I've been guessing late 2002 to mid 2003. A later release date would cause me to find something while I wait, either a S55 or a 2001 E55.

here's a little info on the car...

not sure if it has the price though, but gives you a nice idea about the car. Good luck, and let me say this: you are very lucky to have the opportunity to buy one of these (something I can only dream of right now :-( ).

RC, are you referring to the next generation W211 E-Class? I believe it will be a 2003 model arriving in late 2002. However, the AMG versions never come the first year. The AMG version of the W211 will probably come as a 2004 model year. Is the supercharged version going to be in the 8 cylinder.

Yea, I'm talking about the next gen E class. I was guessing mid 2003 for the AMG version (supercharged, 450hp, wondercar). The timetable for the AMG version of the S class has actually been more than a year. Anybody know how long for the AMG version of the new C class is/will take? If the next gen E is not out till mid/late 2002, it may be late 2003 or early 2004 before the AMG is out. If that's the likely case, I will clearly have to do something in the meantime, I do not want to hang on to my 1999 E55 till 2004.

I read over here that the next gen. AMG V8 5.5 will be supercharged to 500bhp+. Can't wait...

No offense, but I really don't see the S55 AMG as a competitor to an E55. The S55 is a much larger, more spacious & luxuriously appointed car...but its power to weight ratio hardly compares favorably to an E55. Now, if you can get someone to stuff 450+HP in an S, then you'd have a car that could keep up...

Choices, choices...I envy yours.

For now, I'll settle for my old 500E (which happened to knock off a 0-60 of 5.10 secs. today, and a 1/4 mi. run of 13.38 @ 113.1 MPH..obviously, I need to supercharge it)
