Mercedes 126 custom gauges
Hey guys,
For those 126 owners tired of crappy lighting, here is a chance to do a really nice upgrade. Go to www.speedhut.com and click on model development. Go through the steps and you will be able order custom lighted gauge faces. I have no affiliation with Speedhut; however, I do have a 560 SEC with very poor cluster illumination. |

Those guys are way too expensive!!! If they sold the gauges for HALF the price, TWICE as many people would order them. Also, look at the turnaround time 4-6 WEEKS!!! Those guys need to be realistic!!!
I would take a set for my 300E Though!!! ![]() A member on here (ronald_m also known as MBfanatic01 on ebay) makes white faced gauges for our cars( I bought a set from him off ebay). I have been pursuading him to make some REVERSE GLOW gauges for our cars, If enough of us are interested, maybe he'll budge, and of course Mercedesshop members will get discounts!! PM ronald_m !!! PM ronald_m !!! PM ronald_m !!! PM ronald_m !!! PM ronald_m !!! PM ronald_m !!! PM ronald_m !!! PM ronald_m !!! PM ronald_m !!! PM ronald_m !!! PM ronald_m !!! PM ronald_m !!! PM ronald_m !!! Way too expensive? How do you figure that. These are high quality custom made electroluminescent gauges. Not exactly cheap to make. I have been looking all over for a company who will custom make these gauge faces and the cheapest I was able to get these made for is $500. I have heard those gauge faces from mbfanatic are paper and the quality was crap. In fact, the guy that bought a set from mbfanatic was very upset that the faces were so inferior and led the development of these new gauges from Speedhut.
I have a set of the Speedhut gauge faces for my Porsche 928 and they are very high quality and really update the poor illumination of the VDO gauges. For comparison sake, the gauge faces from www.nrauto.com are $139 and are not even lighted. The ones from www.speedhut.com are lighted and can be customized with your choice of fonts, custom graphics, logos, colors, ETC.... |

If you early W124 guys (1986-1989) want to improve your gauge cluster lighting, I recommend getting a gauge bezel from a 1990-95 model, part number 000-542-03-87. The illumination channels are much improved over the earlier models.
For the W126, it also seems that the gauge bezel was replaced with an improved version later in the model run. |

Why is speedhut so model specific?? I mean I would buy the set for 100 bucks, but its ONLW for w126 and for a 300E, there would have to be 25 NEW people to start manufacturing of the gauges.
Does any one with a 300E want reverse glow gauges??

Mike,
Are the clusters the same in a 300 E as a 126? If so, order away. If not, the initial set-up is high on the first cluster and after that there is a big economy of scale in production. I would imagine it takes around 10 to 15 gauges to break even and it takes the other 10 to 15 to make it worth their while. The clusters faces are of very high quality; in fact, Mercedes uses this exact technology on their new models: http://www.durel.com/mercedes.htm |

so are you suggesting that I should just go ahead and put my order down for a set of the w126 gauges??
On the w126 and w124 gauges, I noticed: -->The redlines are different -->The top speeds are different Will they be able to modify this for me, or do I have to live with it??

Mike,
As far as the ordering, that would be up to you. If everything is the same I'd order the set, that is, if the speedometer as well as the rpms line up with yours you should be ok. They can remove the rev limit all together. Have you gone through the set-up? Give it a try. |

Have you posted anything about that here? I was thinking about the possibility of doing that to mine at some point. I've seen bolt on blowers, but have no idea if something like that would really work. How did you supercharge yours?
