I have an 87 300SDL (right, the 6-cylinder) which is equipped with the Trap Oxidizer, rather than a Cat. If the Trap Oxidizer falls apart internally, it looks like the Turbo gets the broken parts right in the inlet. I understand that the Trap Oxidizer is warranted by MBZ for life. How does one tell if it isn't functioning any more? I get some black smoke under accelleration, but not huge amounts.

Take the car to your local dealer & have the trap ox. replaced with the updated system.

I checked with the local authorized MB dealer today. The service department said that the warrantee program to replace all the Trap Oxidizers ended in 1996, and that he couldn't give me a price to do it off warrantee because the parts to do the job were no longer available.

Does this track with what you know? What can I do to keep this Trap Oxidizer thingie going?

NO!!! The cars equipted w/trap oxy. are all supposed to be modified at M.Benz dealers. If the dealer won't help then call Benz at home office. Don't wait!! This is an Emission recall.
