My best friend has a 300D and I want it to have a bit more grunt (if that is possible for a 300D- great car but really slow).
Could you give me any advice on any fairly cheap ways of gaining greater performance with this car?

Aside from making sure everything is mechanically tip-top, I'm not sure what else you can do that isn't major surgery. Sorry I can't offer you anything more offhand.

You can turn up the fuel mixture at the injection pump and it will be faster but it will smoke alot more!!! It is a seesaw effect.

How about an engine swap? I have a 1979 240D and at 7800 ft msl, it is severely underpowered. Has anyone ever toyed with an engine swap similar to a V8 in a Jag and if so, what will work??

There is a guy locally who put a smallblock chevy in a 280ce, the only problem is that when he wanted to sell the car, nobody in town would touch it.

In my last Star magazine there was good information the diesel fuels and the like, I suggest you get this throgh them and research and educate yourself on what all the different numbers actually mean.

There is also mention of the oil companies creating a new " Super" class of diesel, and it apparantly is out at some stations already.

The scope of discussing all the tech points about cetane numbers, etc.. is to huge for this column, but if you research it long enough, you would be able to learn whom has the best diesel in your area for performance ie, horsepower.

Since diesels aren't adaptive to qualities of fuel w/o adjusting injection pump timing find what works best for your car, what is good for the "goose" isn't good for the "gander". On older cars as the timing chain stretches the pump timing is retarded. Several deg's make a big change in performace
