subframe mounts

I would like to replace the front subframe mounts on my 1987 560SL. Can anyone tell me exactly how to go about this? Thanks

If the fronts are anything like the rears then I'd highly recommend the homemade threaded rod and washer gadget to install the new one. Without it it will be nearly impossible to seat properly.

The fronts go right in if you spray them with some silicone. No special tools needed. The old ones come out fairly easily, too.

Rears are a different beast.

Randya your way sounds good but do you have to remove the
motor mount bolt before you lower the sub frame????
Or will the engine dop that much with out busting something????

I changed Front and Rear

The fornts were easy. I didn't need to unbolt my motor mounts because they were broken in two. I replaced them as well. Do one side at a time and the sub frame will drop enough to give you room.

The rears were not so tough. I couldn't fit my big hand into the area to use the threaded rod so I just stacked washers and used a solid aluminum shim at the top to keep the tube from slipping through the washers. They didn't release at once so I lowered, sprayed with PB Blaster and raised the sub frame again. They all came out without drama by doing it two or three times. I also let it sit in tension for about 5 minutes each time. Regarding seating, the didn't bottom out in the cup even with silicone grease on them. I got them close, raised the sub frame and got the bolt started. It snugged a little more and I think it's good. I believe they should be a little above seated to the bottom of the cup. One suggestion is to do the rears one at a time to keep the sub frame from moving around. Replace the differential bushing at the same time. The rear bushings made the big difference in feel. Good luck.
