Door Speakers???

A past Porsche owner, I recently purchased a 1996 SL500, formerly owned by A.J. Foyt, and I'm thrilled with, however, I have a slight problem. The passenger door speaker is shot.......and I can't stand it. First, is it difficult to change the speaker? Second, should I replace both door speakers while I have it down? Third, what size are they? (before I tear apart the doors I want to have the correct ones in hand to replace them with). And fourth, I would like any input you can give me regarding what type I should put in, and where to purchase them..........I want something good!!!

Finally, is there any information out there regarding how to take apart the door trim?

The instructions at http://www.astro-nut.com/mb-door.html are nicely done, but they are for 1990-1995 models. Besides, on a 1996 it is not even necessary to remove the door panel to replace the woofer. You simply remove the grille at the bottom of the door and you have easy access to the woofer. I think the grille is secured with a single phillips screw.

I would only replace a speaker which is giving you a problem. And I would only replace with an identical Bose unit. I bought a replacement pair from a junkyard for just $60.

I recently purchased a 95 320SL that had a blown speaker in the driver door. Taking the door apart was easy with the instructions I found posted online. Finding a 1 ohm speaker (most aftermarket speakers are either 4 or 8 ohm) was another matter! I finally went to Bose (got their phone number from their website) and purchased a new 6 1/2" speaker for $40 (complete with shipping) - just needed the part number off the old to order. Good luck!
