Gilly, if you're out there I need your help again
![]() Here are the simptoms; The transmission has not been up shifting at the correct time. Sometimes it downshifts when it shouldn't and when needed, (starting out by pulling out in trafic) will not down-shift correctly. Didn't let the car warm-up this morning and about 6 miles down the road I heard a big bang and the shift lever rattled loudly. At the same time the service engine light came on. I had noticed this problem once before (not as severe) while traveling down the highway a bang then rattling of the shift lever. It went away the first time and this time the BANG was very loud and the whole car shuddered. Is it possible that the relay controling the shifting is engaging two gears at once? It seems to be a control problem since the transmission still works fine, outside of the correct shifting problem. I'm afraid that there may be some severe internal damage now and hate the thought of driving the car to the dealer. But before I make an appointment for diagnostics or service I wanted your thought on this "control module". Thanks |

I had a similar problem earlier this year and got pretty stressed out not wanting to spend a big buck. Had my mechanic drain the tranny and replace the filter....it was very much plugged. I've gone 20,000 KM since problem free. That said, there is likely some damage as the metal and crap had to come from somewhere. Steve http://www.mcnallycga.com |

Been there done that .... or maybe not! Brought the car to a Benz dealer and was VERY specific as to what I wanted done (last year) and that was to POWER FLUSH the transmission and what they did for almost $300 was to simply drain the fluid and change the filter. I was so mad I almost lost it. Apparently some of these mechanics think 'we' owners of such vehicles are quite stupid! Although this is the way it is, I feel the problem is still electrical and not the fluid. AND I will admit that it ran better BEFORE the fluid was changed. A place I know of that will 'force flush' the transmission and has this in their advertisement is unfortunately a place that can't be trusted
![]() I will be bringing the car to a dealer to have it diagnosed with a computer which will show all functions and I have heard it will put the transmission through a run and show all things!?! I've got my fingers crossed. |

As I recall, the tranny filter was quite expensive.
That said, my problem was a simple blockage restricting flow, wasn't power flushed however. I have enough little problems with my 500 that they add up to serious bucks so mine might be out the door in the new year. My tranny seems fine but I suspect the tranny has had better days.
