Map sensor adjustment on 73 450sl

I read the other day about the map sensor, the canistor on the drivers front fender, it has four wires and one vac line. The article stated that the white wire with the green stripe must be in slot # 7. I looked last night at mine.
The electrical connection was a white plastic with 4 wires, numbered as follows. #15-#10-#?-#7. and the sensor had the same #s listed on it. But the white connector was in backward. #15 wire was going to # 7. I unpluged it and turned it over. The car did start and ran.
My question is, having this reversed what was it doing to my car?
Thank you Joe
