I'm considering doing some suspension work on my 107 SLC and need to remove my springs. What type of spring compressor is reccomended? I see on ebay the model j-1801 for mercedes, but doesn't appear to be for the 107 and costs quite a bit. Could I get by safely using a generic version that works with clamping hooks? Thanks

Klann is the only way to go. Expensive. I bought mine for $500.00.
I think you can rent one from this site somewhere. Cheap and safe way to go.

Yes, it's expensive, but I would definitely not try to make do on this job. I think that Performance Products may also rent the tool.
In my opinion, this is the scariest job on a car, I've only done it once (on another car) with a cheap tool, which actually wore out in the process of doing the job!

When I did the rear on my car I bought a well made, but generic, internal spring compressor. It worked fine.
Since then I've learned that Autozone has a tool loaner program. Check it out.
