1986 560SL. center console question
The ratty 560SL I bought recently has a large area toward the rear of the center console that is just plain console material with 2 big pieces of velcro on the bottom...should there be a piece of carpet, or something on the bottom of the back portion of the center console? It may be just as well that there's nothing there yet...dumped a Super Big Gulp all over there today on the way to the office. There was a sea of diet Dr Pepper...argh.

centre console
Hi Dave
In my 1988 300SL there is a peice of carpet matching the cabin carpet (black in my case) fixed with velcro - It seems to be original and it's useful as it stops things rattling about. cheers Jim

I recently had new carpets installed in my '79 450SL, and they installed a new carpet piece there, also gave me a spare. It has trim around the edges, and was there when the car came from the factory. Mine doesn't have the velcro, it just fits in the little slot around the bottom edge.

I was thinking that there should be a piece of carpet there, or at least a "mat" of some sort, like the removable rubber pieces in the bottom of drink holders in newer cars.
