Miles and kilometers

I have just bought a 1992 Mercedes SL 300 24. It is a right hand drive import. Although the writing between the trip meter and the oidometer says "miles" it is actually reading in kilometers. Is there any way to change it to read in miles?

i have a low mileage speedo head if you need it. it is definately miles.

I am not certain about this.....Read it a while back on another forum. But, in the center of the clock adjust knob is a small button which you can push in with the end of a small stiff wire. Pushing the button cycles the VDO through some diagnostics and set-ups. I have never tried it myself. Anybody else know more about this?

First off, is it the digital or the analog odometer? If its analog, you need to change out the gearing to make it read appropriately. If it is the digital, I think that there is a way to program it to read in the other format.

Or, are you talking about changing the little piece that says "miles" on it?

It's an analogue one. I'm thinking I need a new instrument cluster.

mike see my post above, the one i have is analogue and will plugh right in to yours, just open the case remove a couple of screws and pull yours out and reinstall the replacement. i am sure shipping to manchester isn't that costly.

Hi Mike,
I have a 91 500sl also an import, it came with a digital speedo in KPH only.
I managed to find an analogue one and tried it - it worked fine, no problems.
The local Mercedes dealer said it would not work and also said they would have to put it on the computer at 300 gbp otherwise the car would not run !! Bull**t no problems, just another Merc dealer ripoff.

Might be of interest to you, you must check compatability betwee 500sl and your 300.
