Smile New Member, 280 SL Euro 1979 and 67 VW Beetle

Had these cars for about 4 years restoring the VW. I'll get pictures in soon. The 107, M110 280 sl euro spent 14 years in an upstate NY barn til I recued it for $1300. I've got new interior and roof and am waiting to put it in the shop soon for some welding and body work. Euro cloth interior.

Somethings draining my battery quickly and I can only go as long as I'm on the gas. If I slow down, I stop. Starts instantly but won't idle low. Alternator, regulator?
I've got a mechanic friend so we'll probable get it running better by the time it goes to shop. Looking forward to looking around at some of the old 107's Euro.

My VW club on LI has over 150 members, I'll drop a picture of that off the chassis restoration soon. Regards.

there is nothing in the car that is complicated electrically i dont think.

i would just take it to autozone and have them hook up your car to the machine and give it a test.

if it is the alternator the first thing is to suspect the brushes/ regulator. they come as a unit and can be changed in about 20 min. they go on the back side of the alternator and the wires plug into them.

welcome aboard. sounds like an interesting little clutch of germanic iron you have there.

How do you know your problem is electrical? The fuel injection system in these cars simply HATES not being used regularly. I'd be looking at FI components, too. Have you cleaned the system with a good, healthy dose of Techron?

If it is indeed electrical in nature, the voltage regulator is a cheap and easy fix. It merely bolts into the back of the alternator. Just click on the Buy Parts icon at the top of this page...and help keep this forum going!

Thanks page62 but the new battery won't hold a charge

When I jumped the car it seemed to run proportionately to the amount of time I charged the new battery before it died and wouldn't start without a jump. I'll try both your ideas, thanks good ideas, I'll pass them on to my buddy who knows a lot more about this stuff.

That R107 is a beauty!!! Check out those euro headlights. Not so many here with the 280 motor, the best of them had the manual!!

Does your state require front license plates? There was a recent thread here on Euro plates, that car might look really cool with a vintage '79 German euro plate on the front, it would fit right in the holder already on the car as you have it now.

You could get an
authentic German one on www.ebay.de right now for just a few euros, 95% of the ebay sellers on the Schnellstrasse speak German, are honest to a fault, prompt shippers, and pack REAL thoroughly. (I've bought from them for years, with NEVER a problem. Just a thought.

Thanks for the great responses

Thanks everyone, you've made me feel good. Glad you like the older MB's not a classic but I'm pleased to have an unusual 280 sl euro. I'll get more pictures soon now that I know how to post. I'll load the other German Vw when I find the shots or take more. Any interest in seeing 1929 Ford coupe, truck, 1930 for and Olds sedans and a 1921 overland? My friends bought this set of 5 last year and four are miticulusly(sp) restored? The picture in my thread was pre-restoration. It has a new top and interior now. I like the cloth and leather door skins, nice touch. Thanks guys
