190SL power
I am thinking about buying a late fifties 190SL. Are they underpowered? what do they compare with? how is the MPG?

Yes...they are under powered...there was a twin Weber carb' kit made for them.
The car is heavy and my customer reports 18 to 26 mpg depending on use. 1897cc. 105 BHP. Torque = 105 ft/lbs 8.5 to 1 compression ratio. OE carb's = Dual Solex 44 PHH Wt= Roadster 2552 lbs. Wt= Coupe 2596 lbs. 0-60 mph = 14.5 seconds. .

i owned a 190sl in the mid-sixties and drove it for 2 years on the freeways of chicago and made several extended road trips in it. i never thought of it as underpowered, perhaps distracted by its many other saving graces. they are absolutely rock solid and a joy to drive. i've owned an untold number of cars since and still think fondly of the 190sl. by the way, mine was a year old when i bought it for $2600.

190sl
The one we had will run 100mph on the hwy.and it will take a corner at high speed like it was glued to the road. Nice little car. I was only 14 so I'd never got to drive it myself.

love the 190sl
we have a 1961 /190sl and love the car. sure it doesnt go like a 500sl, which we have, but its a lot of fun to drive. it really cruises nice on hiway. keeps up to mosthandles fine. we changed the carbs to weber so we have beter driveablity then with the stock carbs.parts can be expensive, but its part of owning a benz. hope you find a good one , no rust, and you will enjoy

Hi Andrew,
First and foremost, check out this site (learn it, live it and love it ![]() http://www.190slgroup.com/ I personally think a 190SL is a fine choice for a classic roadster, especially since almost all of the parts are still available. I seriously considered a 190SL but ended up with a 1968 250SL, as it was more affordable for me. Also check out: www.oursl.com |
