Parking brake adjustment on 560SL
I tired unsuccessfully to adjust the parking brake on my SL last week. I figured I'd get around to it one day. Well, today I went to get an inspection and the car failed because the parking brake didn't hold. I did not know that was part of the inspection. So now I've got 30 days to get it fixed.
I'm in the garage now trying again. Still no luck - my parking brake set up does not look like the one in the manual. There are directions for up to 1985 and for post 1985 and mine doesn't look like either one or at least I'm missing something. The directions say to loosen the adjusting screw and I sure cannot find such a screw. I can see the adjusters in the wheel through a lug bolt hole, but turning it doesn't seem to do anything with the phantom screw not loosened I guess. I had my wife engage and disengage the parking brake while I watched the movement underneath and the mechanism was moving, so I assume the problem is in the adjustment in the rear wheels. Input appreciated. Thanks.

With the parking brake set, do both wheels move or just one or none?
There is an adjuster under the car in the prop shaft tunnel which will adjust the travel on your pedal, if in fact it bottoms out without fully engaging the parking brake.

Well, mission accomplished. I have no idea where that adjusting screw is the manual mentions. I took the rotor off of one wheel and watched how the star adjusting wheel worked. Either the manual was wrong or I was reading it wrong, because the adjustment directions are just the opposite of what I read in the procedures. Anyway, I cleaned up only the one side. I had such an awful time getting the rotor off that I chose not to go that route on the other side. Plus, once I saw the right direction to adjust things, I just did the reverse on the other side and it worked well. The parking brake pads had plenty of element left on them, but they were awfully dirty and glazed. I sanded them down to get a nice stopping surface again, put it all together and adjusted both sides and it passed the safety inspection this time around.
Another one hour book time job successfully completed in a day and a half.

Len:
I bet you made the same mistake I did first time I adjusted the e-brake. I turned the star wheel the wrong direction. Once I turned around my thinking cap everything was A-OK. 230/8 |

Yep, that's what I did, but I swear that's what the manual said?
