R129 inside rearview mirror question

Hi again… great forum…

Still trying to figure out some of the details of my new old 500SL. Found out, that the fake alarm, wasn’t fake at all. Did wake up, all the neighbours last Sunday

Can somebody tell me what the little ”eye” in the front for the inside rear-view mirror of the R129 ‘93 is used for, the user manual doesn’t say…?
