What is so special about the left 560SL motor mount?

The left mount is about $45.00, the right about $16.00. The mounts for my '85 380SE were about $13.00 each, but are identical. The 116 engine mounts for a 380SL are less than $20.00 each, and right/left are different. The 117 engine mounts for a 560SEL are $13.00 or so each, identical L/R.
Can anyone tell me what is so radically different about the 560SL left/driver side mount to cost so much more, or is it a minor difference (like redrilling the subframe mount bolt hole) that can be accomodated by modifying a right side mount, or a 560SEL left side mount?

The left is apparently under more pressure and needs to be heavier duty. They both sound cheap to me, compared to some of the later V8s.

I suppose that's engine torque that would necessitate this?
So it's physically identical to a left side 560SEL mount, but the rubber is denser or compounded differently?

They do the same thing with w123 cowl drain tubes. The left is $15 and the right is $45. They are the same construction but one bends to the left and the other to the right. The dealer had no idea why the price is different.

Only after market mounts have a different price. Genuine MB mounts, which in my opinion are the only ones that should be put in the car are about the same price. Last time I bought them they were about $50 per side.

I Knew It - I got ripped!

I received my new motor mounts yesterday. Guess what - The right one ($14.47) has the part numbers stamped on it for both the right AND left side, while the left ($45.47) is stamped for the left side only. The left is a Meyle, the right is Kratex. Unless there is something in the rubber compound or manufacturing process that is different, and a close examination tells me there ISN'T, I paid $30.00 too much for nothing.
So, if you want to save the money, order two right side mounts. I can't send mine back and save anything now, because of the shipping, but I can help the next guy out....

In my opinion and especially with motor mounts, If you want to save money go to the nearest MB dealer or call Phil and get a genuine set of MB mounts for about $100.00. The left and right MB motor mounts have different part numbers for a reason.

I'm with John. I am OEM on just about everything MB but as a rule on ALL of my vehicles I buy OEM based on difficulty of the replacement procedure. The harder / longer the job....OEM.

I just bought mounts for my 560SL from the dealer and have them sitting on my desk right now. Paid about $50 each after MBCA discount. They sure do look like they might be interchangable, but they have different part numbers stamped on them, so there has to be some subtle differences in them. I'm also for OE Mercedes parts for most things rubber for sure.

What manufacturer are they, or can you tell from the part or packaging?

Phoenix (Megi ,their autoparts subdivision). Not available as aftermaket parts.

...or might be Boge.

Usually there is a difference in material of left and right motor mounts, hardness of rubber etc.(hence the different numbers),although they might look identical ...however,most non-oem brands list either of them as applicable to both sides. I prefer the OEM.

Here's a shot of my OE mounts. Can't tell the manufacturer, although there is a symbol on them that look kind of like a Chevrolet emblem. Not sure if that's the manufacturers symbol of not.
