Sticky Plastice Parts Answer
Phil Here, I notice a lot of questions about Sticky Plastic Mercedes interior parts in this Forum. Problem solved! I just finished restoring a used Rear-view mirror that came from a Salvage Yard, The mirror was Sticky and you could peel the finish off with your finger nail. Someone or Mercedes had painted it with a Leather dye or a Enamel paint. The solution to this problem is to remove all the old finish on the part using Denatured Alcohol or Lacquer Thinner, These products do not harm the Plastic Part. Underneath all that Crap paint, you will find a nice Black Plastic part with a Leather embossing pattern. Make any repairs to the part using Super Glue or Epoxy cement. Next, Refinish the Plastic part by using, SEM Color Coat for Plastic. Do not use a Leather Spray! This product sticks to the Plastic and produces a great finish. The color [Sand-Stone] matched my Beige interior perfectly.
Hope this helps Phil Justice 1992 Sweet 500SL |

From what I've read on several boards, it's SEM or nothing for redying plastic. It wears well and looks good for a long time. However, I did get amazing and durable results from using shoe leather/heel dye on an otherwise ugly steering wheel that I bought as a core to have recovered.

Phil Here. SEM Color Coat for Plastic, Don't be confused by SEM Custom Coat for Vinyl and Leather, That's were the problem arises! It dose not stick to the Hard Plastic parts. If you use a Vinyl Dye on hard plastic you will get a Sticky mess.
