82 380SL - pls help ID this vacuum connector

Just beginning to learn my way around the SL after the 300SD.

Can anyone please tell me if this connector on top of the block should be plugged like this or if it should be connected to something? I have a flare shift problem on the tranny that sounds like a vac or modulator valve issue.
