Location of #1 wire on distributor cap

Can any tell me how to locate where the #1 plug wire should be placed on the distributor cap, or does it make any difference. There is no mark on the cap itself. Thanks.

It does matter, greatly and there should be an identifying mark on the cap. But have you lost all sense of where the wires go? We could tell you where the number 1 cylinder was if you weren't so secretive with the year and model information.

There is a mark on the upper edge of the distributor - Take the cap off and you should see it - it's at about 1 o'clock looking at the dist from the front.

You may already know this:

------ Front ------
Driver ------- Passenger
side ----------- side
5 -------------- 1
6 -------------- 2
7 -------------- 3
8 -------------- 4
---- Firewall ---

The firing order is 1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2 (clockwise starting at 1 oclock)

You really need to get a manual for the car! But, truthfully, I don't see this info very clearly indicated in my manual.

Nice picture Delta! I think he said earlier he had a '76 107044, so he does have a V-8. That would be the cap then that you posted, and there would be no points - right? So my earlier post about there being a mark on the distributor may be wrong. It is there on pre-76 cars.

Thanks Graham, I missed the details of gtwendt's engine type but with your detailed (made to order) diagram of firing order and location of cylinders per bank (who needs fax!) gtwendt shouldnt have a problem replacing wires in the right order. But as gtwendt said, not all caps have the numbering of cylinders if is not OEM. Methinks

Wink Location of #1 wire

Thanks to all of your great help I was able to find the notch on the distributor for the #1 plug. I was then able to place all of the wires in the right position. Car started right away. My manual arrived yesterday! Thanks again.
