Moms 88' 560 SL has a leak at the brake booster

Not sure what protocol is but there is a leak between the booster and the metal apparatus that holds the reservoir to the booster. Her brake light is coming on and the fluid is near the min mark.

Is this a rebuild or do parts need to be replaced?

Thanks!

Doug

Alright I am going to replace the master cylinder. Looks pretty straight forward but as always would love some tips or advise.

TIA

Read up on doing this job if you've never done one before.

Get a bleeder kit. Bleed the hell out of it after you put the master cylinder on. Perhaps you want to bench bleed the master cylinder before you put it in.

Replace ALL the brake fluid.

Test drive it very slowly and make sure your cable brake works before your first test drive.

Good luck

That would be a really good idea. And do not drive the car until this is done.

Is this subject to a catastrophic failure? I have the part coming and she doesn't drive much, a couple miles to work each way but please chime in if this is an issue.

Do you actually see fluid leaking out right there or is that where you think its leaking?

Yes, it is leaking between the master cylinder and brake booster. I received the new master cylinder today, however I did not get a new seal that goes between the booster and master cylinder and wonder if I shouldn't replace that as well? Not sure if those can be re used or not?

It would be very wise to replace the seal too.

Yes, it can cause a vacuum leak otherwise. Cheap insurance to replace it now.

I would also replace the reservoir. I have had a couple of situations where I installed a new master cylinder only to find that the seals on the reservoir leaked when I put the power bleeder on. And chances are, that no matter how careful you are, you will break one of the the bottom fittings removing it from the master cylinder.

In any case, replace the seals between the master and the reservoir.

You also want to consider flushing out the booster, if fluid leaked into the cavity.

Otherwise, the the brake fluid can cause the booster to fail.
