Cat Converters

I have a 1976 450SL. It appears that the cat converters are mounted to the manifolds. However, looking under the car, I see another converter/muffler downstream within the exhaust system. The muffler is at the rear of the car. What is the converter/muffler downstream from the manifold? Thanks for any clarification.

I think that I just answered my own question. The center resonator is most likely what I'm looking at. Any advantage in removing it and go with just the cats and muffler? Thanks again.

move the cats downline...they are the cause of many issues under the hood due to heat.

no cat

Hi there

Just remove the cats, the SL's were designed without them and run much better for that - Euro models haven't got them fitted and I believe even when imported it's only when local regs demand it.

Give yourself more power !

Cheers

Jim

Depending on where you live, if you remove the cats you won't be able to drive the car. I live in BC Canada. and my car needs to go through emisions testing every year. If I removed my cats I wouldn't be able to get insurance, or register my car. Be sure you check your local emisions standards before you make any changes to those systems. Some juristictions are regulated some are not.

Thanks for the info. Assuming I could remove the cats legally, is it a big job to remove them? Any guidance on this procedure anywhere? Thanks!

I may be wrong but I think you need to use 77 up manifolds and header pipes to make the change. There is a '79 450 being parted out on another forum.

if you do keep them , you still have to move them, most muffler shops could do this for you. I have found that muffler work is not fun nor easy, bolts that are hard to access, frozen on ect ect. On a lift with a good torch , the job is easier. The shop here in town charges 20$ to fix most issues on a muffler system, so it is a no brainer for me
