R129 Soft Top replacement

I will need to replace my soft top before the next open-top driving season.

Does anyone have any suggestions for where I can learn about different material being sold? Comparisons with new materials vs OEM?

How to choose an installer? Should I pay dealer price to assure the job is accomplished correctly?

Any help much appreciated.

Haartz makes the cloth and they have a good website that describes their materials - Seems that 129 should use Sonnenland Plus fabric for the top.

Having top installed by a professional with experience in your particular car would be the best route. Having someone learn on your car is probably not a good idea! Going to dealer is probably very expensive.

Have you seen the 129 top install video? This link has download in about middle of page:

Good Luck

Dealer price on the soft top is about $5,500 for parts. I got a quote of $1K in labor to install. Most dealerships don't install soft tops, they sub it out to an auto apholstry shop. I am about to start doing mine myself.

R 129 soft top replace

I also needed a soft top replacement for my car, and found that the average
price US is about 15 to 1700 including the top, I purchased a MB teaching
DVD from ebay and it gives step by step video and sound instuctions. I used it in my laptop and did the job very succesfully. Most tops are precut and are
nearly a perfect fit to begin with, the only suggestion I make is to make sure
you purchase a quality top , "you get what you pay for". For me the hardest
part of the job was getting the darn contact cement off the support bows.
By the way I would be happy to send you a copy of the DVD, if you email
me your address. Good Luck !!!!!

300sl soft top replacement at a reasonable cost

After lurking around the soft top thread for the last year I finally replaced mine with a very good top at a reasonable price. I used Corona Uphostery in Turlock, CA (90 miles from the Bay Area). I paid an install fee but let him order the top from the vendor of my choice. I used Robbins Tops based on their reputation. I contacted Robbins where I got excellent advice from their customer service gal. They advised me to use stay fast with german design backing. The Stayfast has a 3 yr. warrantee (not windows) while the german material has only a one year. They advised me that the german material is stiffer and thus harder to install. They sell both with the german material more costly. The stayfast was a beautiful top and the installation was perfect. Jesse had the car for 3 days. Look to pay about $1400 or less total cost. Coronas phone number is 209-669-7792. Jesse is a skilled upholster having done some custom work for a show winning dodge pickup for a friend of mine. Jesse was also the first one that said I did not need to replace the headliner-he was right.
