1996 500SL wiper/washer problem.

I have a double problem that happend at the same time. The washer for the windshield went out and at about the same time the wipers do don't go all the way down I have to play with the switch the get the wiper to fully retract out of view.

I check voltage to the motor in the front of the resevoir and no juice I am going to check the other one tonight since I ran out of time.

The other question is are the part numbers the same for the washer motors?

Is adjusting the wiper timing a DIY thing?

I have the same problem with my SL also a 96, except that the wipers work OK. Where is the "other" pump that you are going to check? My wiring diagram only shows the one in the washer bottle.

NEVER MIND, I LOOKED HARDER AND FOUND IT ON ALLDATA. IT APPEARS TO BE ON THE FENDER SIDE OR THE BACK SIDE OF THE WASHER BOTTLE.

Also, what color are the wires to pump in the front of the washer bottle? Mine don't match the diagram.

For the windshield washer pump, Alldata shows the current flow as Fuse 12 in Fusebox 1 (just outside the brake booster) to the combination switch to the pump.

There are 2 washer pumps: One for the windshield and one for the headlights. The one for the headlights is the one towards the fender I believe. The '96s (and perhaps others) had a recall for a problem with the headlight wiper/washer system. If one of the wipers gets stuck (while operating), the washer motor runs continuously, pumping out the reservoir contents until dry and then eventually burns up. This actually happended to me last fall, but when I contacted MB USA they would not honor the recall because they said it was too old. Nice touch.
