1984 380SL Timing Chain UPDATE

Many may remember a couple weeks ago I had the timing chain, guides & tensioner replaced on my 1984 380SL. They found the tensioner guide cracked, & I was extremely lucky I had everything replaced.

NOW, with only 350 miles since the dealer's job, I am hearing again the same "tick tick tick" at cold start-up...lasting a few seconds (as I was hearing before). I called the dealer yesterday, and they were mystified why. They said it could be a lifter. The tick tick is not a soft sound, but pronounced. They want me to bring it back in this Thursday to recheck everything. Any idea WHAT COULD BE WRONG? As I told the dealer, this is extremely dishearten since I just paid a nice sum to get rid of the noise at start-up.

Thanks!

Richard

The broken chain guide may not have been contributing to that particular noise, although it was good you took care of it. Are you using an OEM oil filter with anti drain back valve? A non-OEM filter will allow the oil to drain back causing a pronounced lifter ticking for a few seconds on cold startup (around freezing), while the oil filter is re-filling itself....

Hard starting is usually the fuel accumulator. The symptoms are as follows:

Symptoms for a bad fuel accumulator as as follows:

Start up in the morning when the car has been off overnight is pretty easy as the cold start injector is assisting.
After driving for a short while, shut it off and start it right away. It starts right away (no time for the fuel pressure to bleed down)
If you leave it for 10 minutes or more , it will take a number of cranks to get it going and then it will run rough for a few seconds before smoothing out.
