Our Newest Baby – 1988 107 300 SL

Our Newest Baby – 1988 107 300 SL

My multiyear quest for an SL inline six mated to a manual transmission has ended. My oldest said, “Cool, Daddy FINALLY got his roadster.” He’s still trying to figure out, absent rear doors, how to access the back seats. (He keeps opening and closing the trunk, though). We brought her home last week but have yet to name her. She’s really, really fun to drive. Great road manners and so smooth…

We got her from a couple, the original owners, that purchased her in Germany and federalized her in 1988. They did 62,000 miles over 18 years. The picture below is them saying goodbye.

Euro everything. They ordered it from Mannheim branch 225 (dealer) with Italian spec (c 01.01.1967 # 31.08.1969) including catalyst, reinforced euro-style bumpers, reinforced doors, and US-legal headlights that actually work. It's 904 blue over 278 gray leather. My wife even likes her.

Are Euro lights actually illegal.

I love Euro lights and, when these get cracked or crap out, I will install them. I believe, though, that “Euro” spec lights are technically outside U.S. DOT regulations. Who enforces that, I have no idea.

The issue is the U.S. DOT mandates SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) conformity and, by complying with ECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) standards, Euro lights do not meet SAE standards. It boils down to the light beam pattern.

Look at section 5.1.1: http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regulations/administration/fmcsr/fmcsrruletext.asp?rule_toc=777&section=571.108&section_toc=2075.

I think they cheated on the lights for our SL. They look like SAE lights but function like Euro lights. Meaning they are brighter than SAE lights up to a certain horizontal point and then there’s an abrupt cut off. They work well. Is there such a thing?

The five speed makes the car. I can definitely see the benefits of the lighter-weight six cylinder on the post-1985 chassis. I was awfully glad to come into my 500 5-speed because the power and the noise is very addicting, and I know exactly how you feel.

I haven't had the hard top on yet, but with Texas' rain and heat this summer, I might be forced to. In Texas, the top goes on for the summer, and off for the winter, but I can't bring myself to "killing" my little roadster by putting a top on it.

First thing you need to do is start a new thread with the correct subject line. Sticking your unrelated question at the end of a four year old thread will likely not get you much response.

Try new pads and bleed it again. If that doesn't work you may have a caliber that's acting up.
