Valve guide seal replacements
83 380 SL with at least 180,000 miles-smokes some, uses oil. Novice (not complete beginner) interested in changing out valve guide seals as weekend project.
Q: would this be worth the trouble without doing a complete valve job? Q2: Could a novice do this without major difficulties? Can it be done without completely removing the overhead cams? Tahnks. J. Boggs |

Im not sure about your engine, but if it is a V8 similar to the 420sel's changing the guides took me about 4 hours and $40 in parts. But I needed a special tool which was about $200. My oil consumption went to zero in both cases.
Cam removal not necessary.

So, can I borrow you special tool.....?
My father in law said that we could just lay the cams over and replace the seals. Onfortunately, he lives in Seattle, (I'm in Atlanta) so he can't just come by and help.
I'm encouraged by your success. Thanks. J. Boggs |
