280 SL door check noise

I had a door check installed on my 85 280SL by a local "European" shop that has recommendations on this forum. They did it for a fair price and seemed to know what they were doing but a couple of days later when I open or close the door it sounds like a spring expanding and contracting, something like an old screen door that has a spring on it. They are going to check out the problem but before I take it down to them does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this sound? I always like to have an idea what is causing a problem before talking to the shop boss....Thanks, Desert

Mine was doing something like that, and I was able to fix it by putting some motorcycle chain lube on the door check mechanism. The spout from the lube can was long enough to let me fet it into the workings. This is the little mechanism on the front of the door that keeps it from opening too far.

Good Luck,
Scott

Thanks, I would hope that they lubed it well when installing it but before I try and add lube to it myself I'll take it back to them next week and have them see what's making the "spring" noise. I'll post the results after it's done and hopefully it isn't a major problem....Desert

Took the car back to the garage that installed the new OEM door check, they also could hear the spring "twang" noise. They removed the door panel and new door check ( they still had the old one) so we compared them and the only difference we could see was that on the old one the two springs looked like they were coated with paint or something while the springs on the new unit had no coating. They put the old springs on the new door check unit and that solved the problem. I would suggest that if you are installing a new door check make sure the springs come coated or if not remove them and spray them with a few coats of paint, that seems to eliminate the "twang" noise.....Desert
