350 SL (R107) rear seat belts
Hi list,
I'm new to the list and try to write in my best english, so forgive me in advance... The topic has been already discussed but I haven't found the detailed infos: can anyone explain how do you attach a two-points lap belt on the rear seat of an W107 (I've no rear seat, just a wood bench...)? I've found 4 anchor points: one screw on each side (after removing the side plastic moldings) that seems to be the top shock absorber mounts but will "fit" for the belt, and in the middle of each "seat", one hole and one metal plate. My goal is to put a baby seat (for short country side trip, obviously...). Should I go from one hole to the other one, making a centered seat? Or should I go from one of the side screw to one of the hole (which one then?)? What about the plates? I can't make the belts goes thru, they are too thick...Last question: in the side plastic moldings, I've found pre-cut holes that indicates that the belt should go through...How come? Belts should be in direct tension, if I don't get wrong... Thanks for any tips, Thomas 1979 350 SL Paris, France |

Scarry.
If you are going to mount in the back, which I do not recommend, have you considered also installing a teather? |

You might try contacting ths following vendor, they sell after market rear seats with belts.
http://www.4basic.com/ I'm going to purchase one soon, and would like to know how you make out. I have a 1981 280 euro sl (107). I will find as soon as I install. I'm not going to install until mid summer.

I purchased the 4basic rear seat in MBtex for my SL, the non-folding type, and it looks great.

Thanks to all of you for the tips.
Richard, I'm not sure if the folding (or stationnary) rear seat will improve the safety (if we can still talk here of "safety"...). It surely improves the look but I have no budget for buying one right now ! In any case, I'm only planning to do very short trips in the country side and the belts should be enough. BTW, if you've ordered the 4basic rear seat, you should have the schematics for the belts? The picture on the site seems to confirm that you should attach one end of the belt to the vertical screw behind the plastic moldings, then passing it through the molding by a pre-cut slot, the other end being attached to a hole in the middle of the back of the seat. Thanks in advance if you can confirm. Thomas |

Panzerwagon, I'd ask a pro. The 4basic directions on the seat belts were vague. I am mechanically competent enough to give you advice on something so important.

I understand this, Richard. But even my MB mechanic doesn't want to do the job as he has not the original belt in stock anymore...
Seems like nobody wants to take the responsibility for this !!! (which I understand, even if, IMHO, driving a 2 tons armored-car like the 107, very carefully in the countryside, for a 5 miles trip, with a carefully attached EEC-approved rear belt, is a ten times safer situation than anything you see on an average day on the french highways !!!) Thanks for your help. Thomas |
