1991 300SL-24 transmission overfilled

Hey,
Having a dilemma here. Yesterday I had a good opportunity to check my transmission fluid, after a 30 minutes drive I was letting it idle for a few minutes and I discovered that it is over filled by at least 1 inch above the "max" mark on the dipstick. I should mention that it shifts nicely except for shifting kind of hard in to Over-Drive. I was thinking of extracting some fluid from the dipstick. I'm looking for some advice as I don't won't to "mess something up". No leaks whatsoever.
