88 560SL idle arm bushing bolt vs starter motor
Going through everything on the 88 560SL now that I’m retired. Replacing all the steering linkages and parts today but could not remove the idle arm bolt due to the starter being in the way. So does anyone have experience with this problem. The service manual does not approach this. I figure one of 2 things
1. The starter has to be removed in the 560SL to complete the idle arm bushing replacement Or 2. My subframe mounts and or engine mounts have collapsed eliminating the required clearance for the job. I’m talking about a 1/4” or so ( replacing both the subframe and engine mounts is on the schedule so that may be the solution) I’m going to do a complete suspension rebuild. Front and rear. After all its 33 years old with 105,000 miles on it. Purchased a new mid rise lift from Nussbaum ( and I really do like the lift )to help with the rebuild. 66 years old is to old to be getting up and down off a concrete floor. Wish I had the height for a full size lift. But I don’t. So anyone run across this? Dave Yes I’m back. Last 7 years with the company flying the Boeing 777, I did very little work on the cars. International flying really takes it out of you. Still have the 88 560SL and my Daughters 83 240D. But the 240D has not been driven for a couple of years. Hopefully we’ll find the time to get it cleaned up and sold

On my 6.9 I had this issue too but then again the 6.9 engine is huge. If you're doing mounts then the lift required will likely give you enough clearance to lift the bolt out and drop new one in. Make sure to note the orientation of all the washers in the kit. Torque to spec as well
