1983 500 SL Hood release cable

The hood of my 1983 500 SL has become difficult to open. It requires someone to pull the latch and another to to pull the handle release behind the star. It won’t just pop up like it use to. Does this mean that the cable has stretched over the years and I should just replace it? Thanks.
