I think the clutch can be replaced without removing the compressor. It won't be easy but doable. The work area will be tight.

Eventually the clutch needs to be unplugged. I'd unplug it now at the compressor and see if the fuse blows to rule out a shorted wire to the clutch. Unplug it at the compressor, if the fuse does not blow it is the clutch. If it does blow the short circuit to ground is before the clutch.

One more question: Is there any way, short of getting my overweight body under this SL and even then it's unlikely I'd find it, a way, or website where I can input my VIN number and find out what make compressor was in the vehicle? Some kind of build sheet? Or call Mercedes themselves?

Should be a Nippodenso 10P17C. Search on them and compare the appearance.

Ok thanks. I put a DC capable amprobe around the line coming to the clutch terminal and it was drawing 19.8 amps when the clutch was activated and cooling called for.. I'm told it should be around 5?

Yes 19.8 is way too high, the clutch internal electrical insulation is probably failing. Time for a new clutch.

Ohms showing at coil is 10, double what they say it should be. You're right on I think.. I need a new coil..The 10P17C compressor clutch coil size is 96.4mm outer diameter and 61.6mm inner diameter. 40mm mounting hole size. Trouble is: all kinds of coils out there except ones for 87.560SLs.

After an extensive and exhaustive / draining search for a clutch assy and or just the coil to fit a 560SL, I found this website. Ordered their 15-2631 ac compressor clutch, very reasonably priced and expect to see it delivered UPS. tomorrow. There are myriad 10P17C compressor clutch assy's out there but very very few that stipulate they are made for Mercedes 560SL fitment and apparently, despite saying they're for the 10P17C, they are not all the same.
Anyone else in similar circumstance it's:
ranshu. com
input 15-2631 in the search space.
