I've just bought an '83 380SL which so far I'm very happy with. One problem I have noticed though, is that it takes an age for the gearbox to kickdown - up to 5 seconds at times. I'm new to M-B and the operation of their auto box, can anyone shed any light on what the cause might be?

hi-
How long since you've changed your ATF, I had a simillar problem and was greatly reduced by changing the oil, filter and the gasket. ...... Hope that helps |

Is this occurring in 4th when you floor the accelerator as to pass in a hurry, or when you are going up a grade and expect the trans to downshift to maintain speed?
I agree with alif - a filter and fluid may help. Make sure that the torque converter is drained and refilled, not just the pan.

Yes, it's in 4th when I want to change down to accelerate quickly. The downchange for hills/grades seems to work fine.
I take the point on ATF. I've only had the car a week or so. It's away today having a full service which will include ATF and filter change. -- bobw 1983 380SL |
